Yoga Nidra, or yogic sleep, is a powerful meditation technique and a gentle yoga practice. Come to class ready to relax in comfortable clothes with props such as pillows, bolsters or blocks. Expect to rest on your mat as you are guided though a meditation taking you deep into a state of conscious relaxation between wake and sleep. Benefits of this practice include improved thought patterns, enhanced cognitive performance, stress and anxiety reduction and improved sleep.
Four Questions we are asked all the time…
Q: Is this a good class for beginners?
A: Yes! This is a great class for new yogis and the experienced yogis alike. You do not have to do anything other than relax, be present and listen to the instructor’s guided meditation. Intense vinyasa flows and long asana holds may not be for everyone. Yoga Nidra, however, is a practice that everyone, from children to seniors, experienced and novice, can do. It's easy to follow and experience benefits at any age or ability level.
Q: What props do I need?
A: Arrive in comfortable clothes. Bring a mat, if you do not have one we have rental mats available for $2. Additionally, props such as a bolster, pillow, blanket or eye covering can be helpful to maximize comfort during your class.
Q: What are the benefits of Yoga Nidra?
A: Rejuvenates the body and the brain, fights fatigue, reduces anxiety and lowers high-stress levels, increases mind and body awareness, improves concentration, bolsters memory, purges negative and unnecessary thoughts, improve self-esteem and confidence, balances the nervous system and more. Try it for yourself!
Q: What if I fall asleep and snore?
A: That’s ok! A lot of people do. It is normal. Your instructor will keep reminding you to stay awake and may even offer thought prompts or physical prompts to keep you in the space between wakefulness and sleep. But if you drift off and sleep, your brain is still absorbing the meditation and you will still receive the benefits of relaxation and peace. And if you snore, so what! A lot of people do and you are in good company. The studio is a safe space and you don’t have to worry about being judged in any way. Snoring happens to the best of us and it is a natural process that means you are relaxed and content, that’s the whole goal to begin with.
We offer Yoga Nidra Extension classes once a month. Incorporating a Yoga Nidra class into your practice can help round out the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of your practice.
